Saturday is Washington CeaseFire's 12th annual Day of Remembrance for people who died from gun violence. As in past years, CeaseFire members and others will gather near the wading pool at Seattle's Green Lake Park for a half-hour program at 11 a.m., followed by the planting of daffodils in memory of those lost to gun-related slayings, accidents or suicides. Flower bulbs and tools will be provided.

Benefit luncheon

There's no charge to attend the Atlantic Street Center's "Big League Dreams" luncheon at noon tomorrow at the Pier 66 Bell Harbor Conference Center. But guests will be asked to make a donation to benefit the Atlantic Street Center's counseling and youth and family programs.

Lorenzo Romar, head coach of the University of Washington men's basketball team, will be the guest speaker.

The Atlantic Street Center is one of Seattle's oldest nonprofit organizations. The conference center is at 2211 Alaskan Way. Information: 206-329-2050, Ext. 109.

College prep

Saturday is the Seattle NAACP Youth Council's National Day of College Preparation. High-school students preparing for college, and their parents, are invited to a free, daylong workshop at Seattle Central Community College, 1701 Broadway, on Capitol Hill. During the workshop, which will begin at 8 a.m., students will take a practice SAT test and get help with test-taking strategies. There also will be a seminar for parents on ways to finance a college education.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's Seattle Youth Council is teaming up with the Princeton Review Foundation and the charitable Sallie Mae Fund to host the workshop. Advance registration is required, either online at www.naacp.org (click on National Day of College Preparation), or by calling 206-324-6600.

Care to help?

The Issaquah-based Pomegranate Center is seeking volunteers to learn how to plant a "green roof," similar to roofs atop Chicago's City Hall, the Seattle Justice Center in downtown Seattle and the Vancouver, B.C., public library.

Gardeners, environmentalists and volunteers are invited to learn about ecological alternatives to traditional roofing materials.

The nonprofit Pomegranate Center's workshop will be held on Sunday at Issaquah's Pickering Farm Community Teaching Garden near Pickering Place, off Highway 900 on the north side of Interstate 90. Before volunteers start planting the roof at 11 a.m., the nonprofit organization will hold a 9 a.m. presentation and demonstration on constructing green roofs.

For information, call project coordinator Laura Cacho at 425-557-6412.
