The Plymouth Housing Group's new restaurant, the Plymouth Cafe, opened yesterday in downtown Seattle, as much a social venture as a business.

The housing group said profits will help fund social services for poor and formerly homeless people living in apartment buildings run by the agency.

The cafe is on the ground floor of the St. Charles Apartments, 621 Third Ave., and offers local organic food and homemade specialties. Hours are weekdays, 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. More information is online at www.plymouthcafe.com.

• The Sierra Club will host a free showing of the film "Protecting the Lands Explored by Lewis & Clark," followed by a discussion of this state's roadless and wilderness issues at 7 p.m. at Seattle REI, 222 Yale Ave. N. Information: 206-378-0114.

Cellphone drive

Car Toys at 307 Broad St., near Seattle Center, is the drop-off site for cellphones that can be refurbished for senior citizens, disabled people and victims of domestic violence.

The drive is being coordinated by the Save-A-Life-Give-A-Phone Foundation of Oklahoma City, which two years ago started supplying cellphones that dial 911 to local women's shelters.

Can you help?

The Seattle Aquarium at Pier 59 needs volunteers to learn about marine life and share that knowledge with visitors. Volunteers are asked to work a four-hour shift at least once a week.

An orientation will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in the aquarium's second-floor auditorium. Those who attend should bring a completed application form, available by calling 206-386-4320, Ext. 6.

Getting around

• Scenic Artist Point on the Mount Baker Highway — Highway 542 — is closed for the season. The area has snow on the ground, which can create dangerous conditions for drivers and hikers above the Mount Baker Ski Lodge.

The closure is on schedule, a state Department of Transportation spokesman said, with the gate to Artist Point typically closing between Oct. 15 and Nov. 1.
