To help with fund raising for Special Olympics, Canlis' servers will be assisted during the dinner shift by off-duty Seattle police and officers from other local departments. Seattle's Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske and some of his top-ranking officers will be among the guest servers. Dinner guests will be encouraged to leave a tip for Special Olympics. The goal for the evening is to raise $15,000. The restaurant is at 2576 Aurora Ave. N. For reservations, call 206-283-3313. Seattle schools outreach Seattle School Board members will continue holding public meetings in the districts they represent to encourage participation in district affairs. This month, meetings will focus on the district's five-year plan, which is posted online at www.seattleschools.org. Board member Irene Stewart will head a District 4 meeting from 6 to 8:30 p.m. next Wednesday at Arbor Heights Elementary School, 3701 S.W. 104th St. The district covers schools in the West Seattle area and South Park. Board member Mary Bass will head a District 5 meeting from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Casey Family Programs building, 1123 23rd Ave. The district includes most schools in the Central Area. Board member Jan Kumasaka will head a District 7 meeting from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 28 in the Dunlap Elementary School library, 4525 S. Cloverdale St. The district includes schools in South and Southeast Seattle. Advanced placement Parents interested in Seattle Public Schools' advanced-learning program for exceptional elementary- and middle-school students can learn about it at a two-hour forum at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday in the Mercer Middle School auditorium on Beacon Hill, 1600 S. Columbian Way.
Staff members will provide updates on the advanced-learning work plan and application and testing schedules. Parents also will be able to critique advanced-learning programs through moderated discussion groups.
Students can be nominated by parents, community members, teachers or other students. Nominations for students in first through seventh grades this year are due by Sept. 30. Nominations for kindergartners in Seattle schools and private-school students are due by Nov. 1. Advanced-placement programs for secondary students are administered by individual schools.
