Saturday, August 14, 2004 - Page updated at 12:00 A.M. Business files suit opposing Tent City By Natalie Singer
Woodinville Business Center #1 seeks to shut the homeless encampment down. It filed suit yesterday after a King County Superior Court judge denied a restraining order that would have stopped Tent City before it opened. The suit also names the group SHARE/WHEEL, which is sponsoring Tent City 4. Michael Gendler, lawyer for Woodinville Business Center, said the request to shut down the encampment will likely go before a judge on Sept. 3. Until then, Tent City can proceed as planned. The city of Woodinville decided this week to let Tent City 4 move to city-owned industrial property rather than allow it to set up at Northshore United Church of Christ, which is surrounded by schools and homes. Tent City 4 had been located at St. Brendan Catholic Church in Bothell. The Woodinville site is 1.7 acres on 134th Avenue Northeast, on the western edge of downtown. Woodinville Business Center operates nearby. Tenants include Kumon Math and Reading Center of Woodinville, a credit-collection agency, a magazine publisher, a graphic-design company and Jet City Pizza headquarters. The lawsuit accuses the city of approving the encampment without sufficient notice and with no environmental review. Natalie Singer: 206-464-2704 or nsinger@seattletimes.com
