Saturday, July 31, 2004 - Page updated at 12:00 A.M. 300,000 expected to watch Torchlight Parade By Seattle Times staff
About 95 floats, bands and other parade participants will make the 2-1/2-mile trek down Fourth Avenue, from Seattle Center to Qwest Field at Second Avenue and King Street. Spectators will get a glimpse of runners in the Torchlight Run, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at Qwest Field. The parade takes a year's worth of planning by a group of more than 40 Seafair Parade marshals who volunteer at 39 community events in the Puget Sound area. At the Torchlight Parade, their duties include making sure that the parade stays on schedule and that each float gets no more than one minute in front of the KIRO-TV cameras, which will broadcast the parade on Channel 7. The parade marshals also coordinate security and enlist floats from communities throughout the region. "Elvis" will be the grand marshal of the event, to celebrate the parade's theme, "50 Years of Rock 'n' Roll." Reserved bleacher seating for tonight's parade is available through Ticketmaster.com for $17 and $35. Metro's bus tunnel will stay open until 11:45 p.m. Tunnel routes are 41, 71, 72, 73, 101, 106, 150, 194, 255 and ST 550.
