Friday, July 02, 2004 - Page updated at 08:23 A.M. Mary Kay Letourneu to be released from prison in August
Prison officials said earlier her release date was July 17, but state Corrections Department spokesman Veltry Johnson said Thursday that would have been the earliest possible date. The later date was set after a review of her transition plan. Letourneau received national attention for having two children with her former student, Vili Fualaau. He was 12 and she was a 34-year-old married mother of four when their relationship began in 1996 in the Seattle suburb of Burien. The two said it was love and the boy initially denied he was a victim, but he and his mother sued the Highline School District and police two years ago for $1 million. Jurors found school officials and police were not responsible and awarded no money. Copyright © 2004 The Seattle Times Company
