Friday, June 25, 2004 - Page updated at 12:00 A.M. U.S. sheriffs will honor Reichert By Michael Ko
More than 3,500 sheriffs and other law-enforcement officers are expected to attend the event at the downtown Washington State Convention and Trade Center. Reichert, 53, was chosen from almost 3,100 member sheriffs and said yesterday he had "a little bit of a guilty feeling at being the one singled out." He said several department programs statewide methamphetamine conferences, monthly meetings to examine gun-crime enforcement and prosecution, a community/police athletic league have helped raise his profile in recent years. The national association, which is based in Alexandria, Va., credited Reichert's work on the Green River killings. In December, Gary L. Ridgway was sentenced to life in prison for murdering at least 48 women, beginning in 1982. For a time, Reichert was the lead detective investigating the killings. He was appointed sheriff in 1997. A few months after Ridgway's conviction, Reichert announced he was running to succeed Republican U.S. Rep. Jennifer Dunn in the 8th Congressional District. The conference is an opportunity for sheriffs to share information about crime trends, technology and other current issues. Other highlights include a talk by Reichert and several of his detectives about the Green River case and a panel discussion with true-crime writers. Michael Ko: 206-515-5653 or mko@seattletimes.com
