Wednesday, May 12, 2004 - Page updated at 07:35 A.M. Logging-truck drivers rally to protest fuel prices By The Associated Press
The demonstrating truckers said they have no plans to block traffic as some truckers did in California. Log-truck drivers from around the Northwest were demonstrating, hoping the government will help to ease the pain of high diesel prices. Diesel was selling yesterday at one Puget Sound-area truck stop for $2.24 a gallon. Prices in the Northwest have risen roughly 50 cents a gallon in the past year. Diesel was selling for as much as $2.50 a gallon recently in California. Some truckers said the high costs could force some of them out of business. Others say they may not have enough money for safety maintenance. "The fuel prices right now are eating us alive," said Jerry Eaton, a trucker from Cle Elum. Independent drivers said they would like to charge timber companies a fuel surcharge similar to fuel surcharges added by airlines. Copyright © 2004 The Seattle Times Company
