Thursday, March 18, 2004 - Page updated at 12:45 A.M. One dead, one wounded in Capitol Hill shelter shooting By Michael Ko
The identity of the women who died wasn't immediately available The man, who was shot by Seattle Police, was taken to Harborview Medical Center. Police said his injuries were not life-threatening. Police said there was a report of shots being fired shortly before 11 a.m. near the community center. When officers arrived, they found a man holding a sawed-off shotgun and standing near a woman who had been shot. The man ran into the community center and was followed by police. The man went up a stairway inside. When he turned around with the shotgun, an officer shot and wounded him. Other officers arrived and the man was subdued and arrested. Police didn't immediately know the relationship between the gunman and the woman who died.. There were about 30 people in the shelter at the time, but none was injured in the shootings. The shelter is located in the community center which is next to Meany Middle School at 19th Avenue East and East Harrison Street. It was earlier reported that the community center was in the Central Area, but the center is in Capitol Hill. The shelter was set up to provide temporary housing for people, including some of the people who were burned out of the Jensonia, a seven-story downtown Seattle residential hotel which burned a week ago.
