Friday, February 13, 2004 - Page updated at 12:00 A.M. Store brings underwear back to Alaskan town By The Associated Press
PALMER, Alaska Yes, Palmer will have underwear. Beginning March 3, when the new Fred Meyer opens its doors, the city of 5,475 will be getting its second corporate supermarket. And while the arrival of sushi is cause for celebration for some, so, too, is the return of panties and briefs. Palmer hasn't had underwear since the mid-1980s. Residents have to drive 20 miles round-trip to Wasilla, or 80 miles round-trip to Anchorage, to buy their drawers. No more. Store manager John Mayer said he had to work on getting the new Fred Meyer to carry undergarments.
