Q: I have noticed some salons that do manicures and pedicures are now catering to men. I mentioned to my wife that I would like to try these services, but she replied it is not normal. Is there anything wrong with a man wanting a nice shine put on his fingers and a natural color on his toes?
A: If you wanted to paint your nails black or bright purple, I would consider that unusual — unless you planned on joining a rock band. But to have a professional manicure and pedicure with clear polish on your nails? Nothing abnormal about that. It sounds as if you just want your nails to be well-groomed.
Many men enjoy manicure services these days, thanks in part to the metrosexual movement, which put the general stamp of approval on hair, skin and nail treatments for men.
My suggestion: Start by simply having your nails trimmed and buffed. Buffing, which essentially is polishing with a very fine-grade sandpaper, removes surface stains and ridges from the nails and gives them a subtle sheen.
Live with the look for a while. It may satisfy your desire for shinier nails. If not, have your manicurist suggest a clear or natural polish with a matte finish.
But don't have it done at your wife's salon. I have a feeling she would be awfully embarrassed to walk in and find you perched in the pedicure chair.
Q: Are skinny jeans just for skinny girls? I want to get some, but my girlfriends say I am too heavy. I usually wear boot-cut jeans, size 12 or 14.
A: Boot-cut is a good choice, but go ahead and get your skinny jeans. Why should the size-2 girls have all the fun?
To make your slim-cut jeans look great, here are a few tips:
The cut of jeans varies from brand to brand, so try a number of brands to find the most flattering fit for your figure.
Choose jeans in a dark color, which makes hips and thighs appear slimmer.

Balance the slim pants with a fuller top. A tunic or loose sweater looks great with skinny jeans.
Skinny jeans worn with slim heels or tucked into boots make heavy legs look longer and less heavy. Flats are fine for a casual look — but won't make you look any trimmer.
Choose a style without tons of fancy stitching, rhinestone trim, decorated pockets, etc. Plain and simple is the most chic and flattering look in skinny jeans.
Q: What's your opinion of nail art? You know, little multicolored designs on every nail?
A: I like clear or natural polish on short nails. I also like the look of red and even black polish on short nails, provided it is chip-free.
As for nail art — to each her own. But it's not for me.
