MONTPELIER, Vt. —

A new report says the state of Vermont spent almost $60 million on autism services in 2007.

The report, by the state auditor's office, says that works out to about $60,000 per individual since there's about 1,000 Vermonters with an autism spectrum disorder.

Still, those afflicted sometimes have trouble getting services because of where they live.

According to the report, the state Department of Education spent $27.5 million to provide services to 568 students with a disorder and the state Agency of Human Services spent about $30 million on programs for autistic residents of all ages.
