Most shredders these days handle staples easily. Be sure yours does.

If you destroy credit cards and media disks periodically but not frequently it doesn't justify buying a more robust shredder just for that purpose. But if you discard these items often, there are particular shredders that handle them better than others.

Many machines have a reverse feature so if you feed it too much paper and it jams, you can back things out and prevent a big clog. This is very helpful.
