Tips for fishing with kids

Here are some tips for fishing with kids:

Fish from a dock or shoreline. This allows for a quick getaway if kids get bored. Don't plan an all-day boat outing for a first-timer.

Target easy panfish. These include perch, bluegill, crappie and sunfish. "Lake Washington is one of the best perch fisheries," said CAST for Kids' Jim Owens. "You can catch dozens of fish without any trouble." Though they might not be glamorous, "those types of fish often save the day," agrees Fish and Wildlife's Terry Rudnick. Look for them in shallow water closer to shore; they'll bite on a worm.

Make sure gear works before you go.

Practice casting with only a sinker on the line. Teach kids to look back and make sure everything's clear.

Dress warmly. Bring a change of dry clothes for kids who can't resist getting wet.

Don't forget snacks.
