Rewind: Top 6 'American Idol' performances

Posted by Bob Payne

We live-blogged Tuesday night's "American Idol." The theme was country music, with the singers choosing songs from the Shania Twain songbook. Shania served as mentor.

5:00 - "This ... is 'American Idol!'"

5:07 - Having some technical problems but I hope I can work them out. I don't think I've missed any singers yet ...

5:17 - Oh man. FAIL! Sorry. I'm back in time to catch last few seconds of Michael Lynche's performance.
Randy: "Very good."
Ellen: "It felt like Luther Vandross singing that song."
Kara: "I thought it was great that you didn't change it too much. Great job."
Simon: "I thought the performance was a little bit wet. A little bit girly for you."

This will be an interesting night because I'm not familiar with the Shania Twain catalog at all.

5:25 - Casey James is up next. (I must have missed the opening singer of the night. Wonder who it was?) He's singing the song "Don't." Shania says she's missing some of Casey's confidence. He's sounding like Eddie Vedder again. No electric guitar again - just the acoustic. I can't say this is real thrilling, but it will do. He said he would bring something new tonight, but I'm not sure.
Randy: "One of the best Casey performances ever."
Ellen: "Beautiful. I think it was your best performance."
Kara: "You were vulnerable, you were raw, and that's what you need to do."
Simon: "I agree this is probably your best performance. It didn't feel like somebody else's song."
[Guess I missed the boat on this one.]

5:36 - Crystal Bowersox is next. She's definitely got the country vibe down with "No One Needs To Know." she said she's singing it for her boyfriend. Once again, not real exciting, but I'm not sure it's Crystal's fault.
Randy: "I thought it wasn't my favorite from you but I liked it."
Ellen: "You're brilliant but it wasn't my favorite performance."
Kara: "It was believable."
Simon: "Shocker: We don't like Crystal this week. I thought it was limp. I thought the song was a little more fogettable. It was the only week when I didn't like your performance."

5:44 - So I've found out that Lee DeWyze went first tonight and sang. "You're Still The One." Early opinions are mixed. And Michael Lynche's song was "It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing."

5:46 - Aaron Kelly is up next. Shania's trying to build up his confidence. He's singing "You Got A Way." He's got a strong vocal, but this is yet another snoozer on country night. Somebody lighten up! During the judges' comments he said he was singing the song for his mom. Awww.
Randy: "I think you did a really good job."
Ellen: "The amount of emotion you had was impressive."
Kara: "It was like you really felt it."
Simon: "You struggled the last few weeks, but tonight, you were like a different artist."

5:55 - Siobhan Magnus is singing "Any Man of Mine." Shania says she needs to bring this song to life. Well, Shania you've hit the nail on the head - it's been hard for Siobhan to really get into the songs she sings for this show. In this case, she pulls off. It was the most fun and lively performance of the night, and the vocals were fine. So at least the show closed on a fun note. She even got to hit her freakishly high note at the end!
Randy: "I loved it!"
Ellen: "Good way to end the show - fantastic."
Kara: "Guess who's back? Siobhan."
Simon: "I thought the song was perfect. The screaming at the end might have gone on a bit long. It was like someone was giving birth. But it was good."

What did you think of tonight's performances?

My ranking is pretty simple this week:

Siobhan Magnus brought it! Her's was the only memorable performance I saw.

Casey James, Crystal Bowersox and Aaron Kelly just punched their time cards with nothing special.

I couldn't rate Michael Lynche or Lee DeWyze because I missed their performances.

I'm hoping for something more exciting next week!
