'American Idol' news roundup for Tuesday, March 30
Posted by Nina Pardo
• Are you looking for that perfect gift for someone special? Good news: America's most-watched TV show "Idol" is now for sale, coming soon to a private equity group near you. CKX Inc., which owns "Idol," has confirmed discussions regarding the sale of its company. CKX Inc. also owns "So You Think You Can Dance," Elvis Presley's name and image, Graceland's operations, and a partial stake in Muhammad Ali's name and licensing. The price tag? A mere $558 million.
• Have you ever wondered what the schedule of an "Idol" contestant is like behind-the-scenes? According to this report, the singers must select their songs by Thursday morning, record it for iTunes on Friday, shoot mentor sessions on Saturday, commercials on Sunday, and fit in shopping, interviews, beauty sleep and, don't forget, practice by Tuesday night. Phew!
• I have a good friend and devoted "Idol" fan who turned off her TV last week in exasperation. While the ratings remain strong, they've taken a dip, and talk online is that this season is underwhelming, boring and even the worst ever. But is it really, or do we just have short-term memories? Here's some last minute advice for the contestants: Please sing these songs and don't do this tonight.
My personal advice is that no one dare touch "Shop Around" tonight (or any night for that matter). It doesn't get any better than David Archuleta from Season 7 (see video below). Can I admit here that I still have this performance saved on TiVo?
We hope you'll check back here this afternoon at 5:00 p.m. Pacific (8:00 p.m. Eastern) for live-blogging of tonight's Top 10 singing R&B hits with Usher as mentor. Who do you think is going home this week?
