Five 'American Idol' theme nights I'd like to see

Posted by Patrick Brown

Now that the Top 12 has been established,we're into the home stretch on the way to crowning your next "American Idol." Clearly there are people out there who think the wrong singers survived, but America has spoken, so it's time to look forward and move on to the big stage with the big audience and the big pressure.

That also means it's time for week after week of theme nights. The idea is pretty clear, but the execution hasn't always been the best (anyone remember disco night last year?).

The first theme starting tonight is "The Rolling Stones." Really? That seems about as relevant as say, having the Rolling Stones be the main event at a Super Bowl halftime. Oh right, that's been done too.

Out of desperate hope that maybe an "Idol" producer might stumble across our humble little blog, I present five theme nights that would be better then whatever they're going to shovel at us this season. I also present some examples of songs that certain contestants might want to consider singing on those nights ... you can decide if I'm trying to tank their career or not!

"A Salute to the Great White North" - Our friends from Canada just brought us our most golden Winter Olympics, and they've been exporting vocal talent for years. Break out the beer and donuts, eh!
Aaron Kelly - "Summer of '69 " by Bryan Adams
Siobhan Magnus - "Because You Loved Me" by Celine Dion
Lacey Brown - "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under" by Shania Twain
Katie Stevens - "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne
Lee DeWyze - "Tom Sawyer" by Rush
Tim Urban - "Wheat Kings" by The Tragically Hip

U2 - The world's biggest band might not want to give up the rights to its songs, but I'm sure a call from Simon to Bono and a large donation to the One campaign might just change their minds.
Lacey Brown - "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight"
Crystal Bowersox - "With Or Without You"
Katie Stevens - "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses"
Didi Benami - "Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of"
Andrew Garcia - "Sunday Bloody Sunday"
Michael Lynche - "One"

George Strait - Yep, I'm a closet country music fan (I even bought the Danny Gokey CD last week, and I really like it!). Of course they've had country nights on "Idol" before, but there's been too much opportunity for playing lame songs. We're going right to the greatest country singer of all time.
Didi Benami - "Chill of an Early Fall"
Paige Miles - "The Chair"
Lacey Brown - "I Cross My Heart"
Tim Urban - "Baby Blue"
Casey James - "Amarillo By Morning"
Aaron Kelly - "The Love Bug"

BBC Radio One Top 40 Chart - I'm a little obsessed with BBC Radio One, available on satellite radio in my car. Here's the thing: whatever they're playing on Radio One, we'll be hearing on American radio in about three to six months. So let's just see what's on the chart this week, and make our "Idols" rock it.
Siobhan Magnus - "I Got You" by Leona Lewis
Lacey Brown - "Parachute" by Cheryl Cole
Lee DeWyze - "One Shot" by JLS
Michael Lynche - "In My Head" by Jason Derulo
Aaron Kelly - "Baby" by Justin Bieber
Andrew Garcia - "You've Got the Love" by Florence and The Machine

"Hits from Seattle" - OK, so I'm going a little "homer" here. Let's face it; there's been some outstanding music that has eminated from our fine city. Time to step up to the mic with a rock and roll tour of the Emerald City.
Paige Miles - "What About Love" by Heart
Crystal Bowersox - "Come As You Are" by Nirvana
Andrew Garcia - "Jet City Woman" Queensryche
Lee DeWyze - "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden
Casey James - "Foxey Lady" by Jimi Hendrix
Michael Lynche - "Alive" by Pearl Jam

So what do you think? Could any of these actually work? What theme nights would you like to see? Let us know below in comments!
