'American Idol' names Top 12 and other news for Fri., March 12

Posted by Nina Pardo

Last night AI said good-bye to the final four semi-final contestants: Lilly Scott, Todrick Hall, Katelyn Epperly and Alex Lambert (who didn't take the news too well. Ellen can you get him a contract, too?). Were you surprised by how America voted? Are you confused by who was sent packing? Here's a list of other shocking eliminations compiled from the last 8 seasons by MTV.

On the off chance that you're just joining Season 9, here's a primer on the Top 12 contestants, and some conversations with the Top 12 at their after party last night.

In other news, Danny Gokey's debut album "My Best Days" sold 65,000 copies during its initial week of release, and Jon Stewart impersonates the judges.

Recently engaged Simon Cowell may marrry "Idol" makeup artist Mezghan Hussainy as early as September, according to sources close to Hussainy. Also, the rumored cost of her engagment ring is closer to $400,000, not the reported $750,000. That's much more reasonable, right?

Next week beginning Tuesday night, the Top 12 will take on songs from the classic band the Rolling Stones. Rolling Stone magazine has some predictions about song choice:

On the ladies' side, we anticipate "Satisfaction," "Tumbling Dice," "Time is on My Side," "Gimme Shelter" (if a contestant is brazen enough to handle both Mick and the female leads) and, thanks to Susan Boyle, "Wild Horses." For the men, we're thinking "Brown Sugar," "Miss You," Sympathy for the Devil," "Angie," "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Waiting on a Friend." "You Can't Always Get What You Want" seems destined for the group performance, and let's just add that any contestant who mines Goats Head Soup gets our automatic vote.
