Bud Withers had a great idea and doled out mid-season Pac-12 awards the other day.

If I had a ballot - and if these awards even existed - this is how I'd vote.

Player of the Year: Jorge Gutierrez, California
Freshman of the Year: Tony Wroten Jr., Washington
Defensive Player of the Year: Jorge Gutierrez, California
Most Improved Player of the Year: Brock Motum, Washington State
Coach of the Year: Lorenzo Romar, Washington

Comment: Gutierrez edges Wroten by a hair simply because without him, Cal would fall apart whereas Washington could soldier on in the absence of Wroten. Motum averaged 7.6 points last season and he's second in the Pac-12 in conference games at 19.3. Romar has taken a team that lost three starters and four prominent players and guided them to a first-place tie in the conference race.

Comment: Would have included UW's C.J. Wilcox to the second or third team, but he's played in just six conference games and has missed a third of the Pac-12 season to date.

Chasson Randle, Stanford
Tony Wroten Jr., Washington
Comment: Randle is the only person who can seriously challenge Wroten for the Freshmam of the Year award.
