Austin Seferian-Jenkins to play basketball
Washington tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins will play basketball this season.
"I love basketball," he said. "I'm just a go-go type of person. I don't like just sitting around. I just like to go. I love both football and basketball a lot and I want to be able to play both of them if I can and I have a chance to. So I got to follow my dreams and play both."
Lorenzo Romar said the freshman standout will practice today with the team, but doesn't expect he'll play tomorrow against Seattle University.
"He has every intent to come out and try to help our basketball team," Romar said. "The person that he is is definitely not an I-guy or prima donna. He's a hard, hard worker. Our guys like him. I'm sure he's had discussions with some of our guys.
"Some of guys have seem him play in high school. Played against him in high school. For those reasons, I don't think it will be a distraction on our end."
Seferian-Jenkins, a 6-6 and 258-pounder, averaged 19 points and eight rebounds game at as a senior at Gig Harbor High.
No UW football player has also played basketball since Nate Robinson following the 2002 season.
After discussing the idea with his mother, Seferian-Jenkins said he received the full support of football coach Steve Sarkisian.
Seferian-Jenkins still has football obligations that he has to meet despite a busy basketball schedule.
Seferian-Jenkins wasn't concerned about the possibility of being injured on the hard court.
"Why risk it? Because you can get hurt walking outside on the street," he said. "I could hurt mysefl walking down the street. I've done this and like I said I can't predict the future. No one can predict the future. If I get hurt, I get hurt but I'm not going to think or play like I've got to be careful. No I'm going to go all out and whatever happens happens. I'm not really worried about that. I play with no fear and no reservations."
