Former UW player Andrew Moritz passes away
Posted by Percy Allen
Former Washington player Andrew Moritz lost a three-year bout with cancer and died Saturday night.
He was 33.
Moritz was surrounded by family and friends at Swedish Hospital, including his parents Marilynn and Glen Moritz, younger sisters Elizabeth, Martha, Rachel and Sarah and best friend Daniel Shaprio.
Moritz and his family chronicled his bout with cancer on a blog.
Moritz was diagnosed with desmoplastic round cell tumor, a rare, aggressive, soft-tissue cancer on Dec. 27, 2008.
He was seeking alternative treatment in Canada before checking into Swedish Nov. 18. He spent Thanksgiving with his family and sipped on apple cider.
Former Huskies Chris Walcott, Todd MacCulloch and Chris Thompson visited Moritz Saturday. MaCulloch called Moritz, 'the bravest teammate I ever had."
Moritz, a former walk-on who earned a scholarship his final year, played at UW in 1996-99. He also starred at Franklin High. Here's his UW bio.
Moritz helped the Huskies during their run to the 1998 and 1999 NCAA tournament.
