Two Huskies To Vie For Spot on Team USA
Posted by Percy Allen
Incoming Washington freshman Desmond Simmons will join sophomore-to-be Abdul Gaddy at the training camp for the USA basketball men's U18 national team.
The three-day camp at the University of Texas at San Antonio begins Monday and 19 players have been selected to tryout for the team. Only 12 will be chosne for Team USA which will compete in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship, which which will be held June 26-30 in St. Mary's University's Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio.
Gaddy is the only collegiate player on the team and Simmons was one of six late additions.
Eight players selected to compete in the camp have withdrawn, including Joshua Smith, the Kentwood High star who is bound for UCLA, and Terrence Jones, the former UW recruit who signed with Kentucky.
THURSDAY MORNING LINKS:
--- Oregon forward Joevan Catron, who missed most last season because of a back injury, has been granted an extra year by the NCAA.
--- It's a little old, but Carrick Felix said poor academics had nothing to do with why he didn't go to Duke. He also explained why chose Arizona State. Southern Idaho coach Steve Gosar said Felix decommitted because Duke standout Kyle Singler decided to return to school.
--- Academics played a major role in Washington State forward James Watson deciding to transfer to Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, Kansas. Watson joins Xavier Thames, Michael Harthun and Anthony Brown who have transferred. Two walk-ons have also left.
