Pac-10 will send two maybe three teams to NCAA tournament

Posted by Percy Allen

Interesting story in today's San Francisco Chronicle, which made a few speculations after listening to comments from UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero who also happens to be the chair of the selection committee for the NCAA Tournament.

Chronicle reporter Vic Taffur believes the Pac-10 will send at least two teams to the tournament and maybe three. He believes California is in and Arizona State would make it in if the Sun Devils advance to the finals of the Pac-10 Tournament next week.

Funny it's strange, Taffur didn't say the same thing about Washington. Oh well.

He makes other interesting points. Taffur writes: "No power conference has failed to receive an at-large bid since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985. And what, it's going to happen to the Pac-10 with a Pac-10 guy sitting in the throne with the big remote?"

--- Another very interesting story, which takes a look at expansion. Jon Wilner at the Mercury News believes that if the Pac-10 grows, then it will most likely add Colorado and Utah to the conference. He also explores the problem of splitting the league into two six-team divisions.

--- ESPN college basketball analyst Steve Lavin expects Cal to play deep into the NCAA tournament.

--- The Oregonian's Paul Buker wrote a nice profile on Oregon State's Joe Burton who is he first member of his Native American "tribe - proper name, the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians - to get a full athletic scholarship to a major university in the 127-year history of the reservation."

--- Along with a great collection of links, the Oregonian's Mike Tokito infers OSU coach Craig Robinson will use his two-year extension to leverage the school into building a practice facility for the Beavers.

--- Oregon's Joevan Catron will participate in a Senior Day ceremony Saturday, however, he's petitioning the NCAA for a medical redshirt because he played in just four games this season. If granted, Catron would return next season.

--- Arizona's Kevin Parrom, the Wildcats best perimeter defender, will likely miss this week's game against the Los Angeles schools and could skip the Pac-10 Tournament because of a foot injury.

--- And finally, big congratulations to our own Bud Withers who will be inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame on April 5 at the Final Four in Indianapolis. The future Hall of Famer speculates on Cal coach Mike Montgomery's chances of being elected into the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
