Pac-10 Power Rankings: UW bounces back

1. (Last week: 2) Arizona State (Record: 14-5, 4-2 Pac-10; RPI rank: 60)
Recent results: Won 66-57 at Oregon State; Won 76-57 at Oregon.
ASU has won four consecutive games by a margin of 17.4 points. ... Junior PG Jamelle McMillan (plantar fasciitis) is as listed day to day. .. ASU is tops in the nation in scoring defense allowing 54.7 points per game. ... The Sun Devils are 13-1 when it leads at the half.
Up next: Saturday vs. Arizona.
2. (1) California (11-6, 3-2; 25)
Recent results: Lost 84-69 at Washington; Won 93-88 at Washington State.
The Bears had six guys sidelined during a recent practice. Still Jorge Gutierrez (right knee) is expected to return this week. Not sure about C Markhuri Sanders-Frison (back) who missed Thursday's game and played 13 minutes at UW.
Up next: Thursday vs. Oregon; Sat. vs. Oregon State.
3. (10) Washington (12-5, 3-3; 58)
Recent results: Beat Cal 84-69, Beat Stanford 94-61.
Big bounce back for the Dawgs. They averaged 60.5 points during a pair of road losses in Arizona the previous week and 89.0 in the homestand against the Bay Area schools. UW also forced a combined 42 turnovers. The Huskies lead the Pac-10 forcing 17.1 TOs per game. ... After scoring 52 points in his first four conference games, Quincy Pondexter tallied 52 in last week's wins.

4. (6) Arizona (9-9, 3-3; 69)
Recent results: Won 74-60 at Ore.; Lost 67-64 at Oregon State.
The Wildcats are resilient. For the third week, they won the back half of a doubleheader to salvage a split. ... In the three losses, Arizona has lost by a total of 11 points. In the following games, Zona has won by an average of 15 points. ... Freshman F Derrick Williams is averaging 16.4 points and 7.5 rebounds in the past 13 games.

5. (3) Washington State (13-5, 3-3; 97)
Recent results: Beat Stan. 77-73; Lost 93-88 to Cal.
Coach Ken Bone is considering starting lineup changes to fix the slow starts that's killed WSU lately. ... Despite the disastrous beginnings, the Cougars have been keeping it close. Six of their last seven games have been decided by five points or fewer. ... Over the last five games, freshman G Reggie Moore has averaged 16.5 points. ... Sophomore G Klay Thompson, the leading Most Improved candidate, has nearly equaled his point total from last season. Last year he scored 414 points in 33 games. This season he has 413 in 18 games.

6. (8) Oregon State (8-9, 2-3; 195)
Recent results: Lost 66-57 to ASU; Beat Ariz. 67-64.
Today marks the one year anniversary since coach Craig Robinson, whose sister Michelle is married to President Barrack Obama, officially became the First Brother-in-Law. Said Robinson: "It's been a change for my family. It's been a change for our lifestyle and all of that stuff, but it's been a positive change. It's a humbling experience to be a part of this family now and a part of what's going on in the country, so closely tied to it. I didn't know how my team would react to be under the kind of scrutiny that we're under. And it's not negative, it's just the fact that people know who you are. ... My team has done a great job of being the ambassadors themselves. They handle the question superbly. They're handling the pressure superbly. We wish we were playing better, given the limelight that these guys are under, they're doing a great job. It's been mostly positive."

7. (9) USC (11-6, 3-2; 55)
Recent results: Won 67-46 at UCLA.
Senior transfer G Mike Gerrity exploded on the scene, averaging 14.8 points in four Trojans wins. Since then, he's averaging 4.6 in and USC is 3-2 in those games. Gerrity has scored seven points in the past three games. ... Coach Kevin O'Neill isn't playing the spoiler angle with his team, which is ineligible for postseason play. "We're just trying to play games and win," he said.

8. (4) Stanford (8-9, 2-3; 140)
Recent results: Lost 77-73 at WSU; Lost 94-61 at UW.
Sophomore F Andrew Zimmerman (stress fracture, foot) is out 2-6 weeks. ... And that's not its only problem. The Cardinal has point guard issues. Soph. G Jarrett Man is tied for second in the conference with 57 turnovers. ... Stanford is also the league's worst shooting team at 43.7 percent and the worst scoring defense allowing 72.5 points per game.

9. (5) Oregon (10-7, 2-3; 155)
Recent results: Lost 74-60 to Ariz.; Lost 76-57 to ASU.
After winning their first two games on the road, the Ducks thought they'd pull away from the pack during their three-game homestand. Instead, they lost all three. ... Coach Ernie Kent benched the starting backcourt and Oregon still got drilled by Arizona. ... Kent believes it's a good time to hit the road. He said: "I thought we were really, really focused when we went out on the road. ... We kind of lost some of that in the past three Pac-10 games. Even in Mac Court. That's where our focus has been. Going back out, getting our focus back. Getting our grit back."

10. (7) UCLA (7-10, 2-3; 166)
Recent results: Lost 67-46 to USC.
The Bruins have lost more home games this season (four), they have in the previous three seasons combined (48-4). They haven't lost this many since the 2003-04 season. ... UCLA is one of five teams that have tinkered with its lineup since the start of the season. The others are UW, Cal, Ariz. and Ore. ... Freshman F Tyler Honeycutt is averaging 7.5 rebounds in the past four games.
