Pac-10 shutout snaps 431 weeks in the AP poll
Posted by Percy Allen
The Pac-10 called me back to let me know the answer to a question I had about the last time the conference was shutout in the major polls.
Well, the answer is 1986. We think.
Turns out the conference didn't keep weekly results from the UPI and USA/Today poll (back then it was the CNN/USA Today poll). The league only has weekly accounts for The Associated Press rankings.
In 1985-86, the conference didn't have a team in any of the final polls.
The last time the Pac-10 didn't have a team in the AP poll was Feb. 24, 1987.
Here's our story.
NOTES COMPILED BY THE PAC-10:
--- Arizona freshman F Derrick Williams has scored in double figures in each of the last 11 games. He's averaging 15.7 points/7.1 rebounds, while shooting 56-of-96 (.583) from the field during those nine games.
--- Eight of ASU's opponents have had season-lows in points against the Sun Devils, including its last two victories where it held Washington to 51 points (season average is 79.6 ppg) and Washington State to 46 points (season average is 77.5 ppg).
--- Cal senior F Theo Robertson tied his career-high with 24 points in the loss to UCLA, taking his career total over 1,000 points. Cal now has three players with 1,000 or more career points - senior G Jerome Randle (1,471), senior G Patrick Christopher (1,285) and Robertson (1,037).
--- UCLA forward Nikola Dragovic has scored in double digits in each of the last six games, averaging 15.5 points, while shooting 29-of-56 (.518) from the field. Over his first eight games played this season, he averaged just 7.9 points on 21-of-79 (.266) shooting.
--- USC sophomore F Nikola Vucevic, the Pac-10's leading rebounder (9.4 rpg), has pulled down seven or more rebounds in all but one game this season.
--- After tying a career-low with four points on 1-of-9 shooting against San Francisco, sophomore G Isaiah Thomas rebounded to average 20.5 points over the last four games.
--- WSU F DeAngelo Casto has pulled down 119 rebounds this season, averaging 7.4 per game (fifth in the Pac-10). He's nearly matched his entire rebound total from last season - 131 (4.0 rpg). He leads the league in blocks, averaging 2.1 per game. His 72 career blocks already rank 13th all-time in WSU history.
