Venoy Overton will start; fifth starter undecided
Posted by Percy Allen
Some quick notes from coach Lorenzo Romar's press conference. I'll post a longer report in a bit, but wanted to pass this along for now.
--- Romar said Venoy Overton will return to the starting lineup Thursday against Texas Tech.
--- Romar didn't guarantee forward Tyreese Breshers, who made his first start Sunday against Montana, would be a starter against the Red Raiders nor did he give the nod to sophomore Darnell Gant, who started the first four games and last season.
Romar hinted he could use the fifth spot to play a smaller lineup against athletic teams or begin games with a traditional big lineup depending upon the opponent. It's possible he won't have a firm starting lineup for quite some time.
--- Just for clarification, the other four starters are: Isaiah Thomas, Quincy Pondexter, Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Overton.
--- Romar said Texas Tech (7-0) presents a different challenge than Montana. The Huskies aren't likely to see a lot of zone and will face a man-to-man defense Red Raiders coach Pat Knight inherited from his famous father Bob Knight.
--- The Huskies were sluggish on Sunday after an eight-day layoff so Romar is considering holding a scrimmage next week when the Huskies have a six-day break between games against Cal State Northridge (Dec. 6) and Georgetown (Dec. 12).
--- Romar acknowledged the three-guard lineup (Abdul Gaddy, Thomas and Overton) wasn't effective on Sunday, but said he's committed to it for now.
--- He also believes Gaddy could help the team more if he knocks down his open shots. Romar said he has a lot of confidence in the heralded freshman point guard.
