Quick notes from Pac-10 media day
Posted by Percy Allen
We're halfway through the interviews and here's a quick summary of what's happened so far.
--- Oregon coach Ernie Kent began the day with a little humor. He said he's often mistaken in airports for Oregon State coach Craig Robinson and asked what it's like to be President Barack Obama's brother-in-law.
Kent also said the Ducks are probably the most athletic teams he's had. He said he'll rely on three point guards this season (Tajuan Porter, Garrett Sim and Malcolm Armstead).
Ken said C Michael Dunigan hit the freshman wall midway through the season last year and returned this season 40 pounds lighter. He weighs 242 pounds.
--- Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins bemoaned the Cardinal's youth. They've lost four starters, but he expects Landry Fields to be one of the stars of the Pac-10. He said losing Andy Brown (knee injury) is a significant loss.
--- Oregon State coach Craig Robinson said star recruit Roberto Nelson is still waiting to be cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Not sure if he'll play this season. Robinson talked a lot about Roeland Schaftenaar, who gained 25 pounds of muscle and could mature into a star.
--- Washington State coach Ken Bone said this season will be a big transition as he implements an up-tempo offense and moves away from Tony Bennett's schemes. Bone said freshman Reggie Moore, the former Rainier Beach High star, will be relied upon to score. And he said Klay Thompson will pretty get any shot he wants.
--- And finally, Arizona coach Sean Miller said it's possible the Wildcats' streak of 25 straight NCAA tournament appearances will be snapped this year. He said Arizona is also transitioning away from legendary coach Lute Olson. G Nic Wise has had four coaches (Olson, Kevin O'Neill, Russ Pennell and Miller) in four years. The Wildcats also have nine players who are either freshmen or sophomores.
