Early morning links and the dish from UW's walk-on tryout

Let's start with the links.

Arizona State's Ty Abbott will miss at least a month after undergoing right knee arthroscopic surgery Tuesday.

And Oregon State F Rhys Murphy will also miss at least a month with a broken foot.

And finally a few words about Washington's walk-on tryouts Thursday night. The workout was closed to the media, however, when it was over I was able to talk with a handful of guys who participated.

The Huskies had eight players submit paperwork and undergo physicals. While several UW players watched from the side or sat in the stands, Washington assistants put the would-be walk-ons through a series of drills and a full-court 4-on-4 scrimmage.

Coaches told the players they would notifiy them Friday with a phone call if they were chosen. Earlier this week, coach Lorenzo Romar said he could add as many as three walk-ons to the roster or to a practice squad.

Everyone I spoke with said they were thrilled taking part in a chance to join the team. Think American Idol meets Hoop Dreams and splice in a little Rudy and you've got an idea of what these guys were feeling.

Jordan Veasley, a 6-4 junior, called it "a chance of a lifetime." He never played in high school at Franklin High and said: "I wanted to redeem myself for never trying out. That's my story. ... Basically, I've been waiting for this for my whole life because I didn't play in high school."

Perry Montgomery, a 5-11 sophomore who had Division III offers when he graduated from Juanita High and played Pro-Am basketball this summer, said: "I heard about this two days ago and if I would have known way before I would have started working out. But this is a dream. Just to come out and try to play is a dream."

Kyle Shoun, a senior who played at Black Hills High in Tumwater, said: "It would be a dream to be able to put on the jersey and help them out whatever way you can."
