Coach Lorenzo Romar spoke for 32 minutes and UW players were available for an additional 30 minutes so I won't give you the whole thing.

Here's the highlights of what was said today.

From Romar:

(Opening statement) "It's always a fun time of year. We've got the football season in full swing, and the football season is very, very exciting right now, and that's great. But we also know that with that comes basketball season. And opening day is just a couple of days away; it's something we've been looking forward to for a long, long time, and it's here. I know guys have been looking forward to it, and we're ready to start this season."

(Expectations) "We mentioned this to our guys from Day 1. In 2004, '05 and '06, we went to the NCAA tournament and one year we were a No. 1 seed, we went to two Sweet 16s and were really close to getting to a Final Four. And the following year, 2007, it seemed like there was even more hype than there is right now, and we didn't even make the NCAA tournament. We didn't make the NCAA tournament the following year. A bull's eye on our back coming off the championship season, whatever the case may be, this is an entirely new year. As far as we're concerned, we're not going out there approaching anything like something's going to be handed to us. We've got to start from scratch."

(How is the health of the team?) "It's coming along pretty good. As you know, Justin Holiday is recovering and coming back from hernia surgery. He's shooting free throws; in the next few weeks he'll be back out on the floor. Tyreese Breshers went all week last week and either worked out with us or played pickup, the first time he's done that in about a year and a half. So he's coming along as well."

(Is Tyreese not 100 percent?) "We never, ever gave a percentage and time frame as to when he'd be 100 percent. His biggest issue now is just getting into game condition."

(Are you going to miss Brockman's leadership?) "I initially was concerned about that, but Quincy Pondexter has really stepped up and provided some leadership for us up to this point. We haven't played games, no one's missed shots yet, no one's been pulled out of the game yet. But right now, Quincy's doing a heck of a job as the leader of this basketball team."

(How so?) "He's in great condition. He's trying to be first in everything we do. He knows everything that we're doing. He's leading by example, but he's also leading verbally. It's great to lead by example, but real leaders, they open their mouth. And Quincy's doing both."

(Starters?) "Quincy Pondexter will probably start, and Isaiah will probably start. Beyond that, I have no idea. And that's much better than I usually give."

(Will Venoy Overton come off the bench?) "Everyone assumes that Abdul Gaddy will be the starting point guard. That's not our assumption. It's the guys that go out there and make the best team. Obviously, Abdul is very talented, and probably the most pure point guard. But whichever one of those three don't start, they will be considered a starter. They just won't have their names called at introductions."

(Who are you most surprised by?) "Maybe Quincy Pondexter. Right now, he's playing at a high, high level. And again, you shouldn't be surprised because in the NCAA tournament, he was the best player on the floor in both games. He was very consistent. Quincy is not only able to take big shots for us but he's been able to make big shots for us. He became someone that we can just count on. He could be good."

Some notes.

--- Isaiah Thomas said he'll consider jumping to the NBA if he receives assurances that he'll be a high first-round pick. Thomas also said, he might consider going out for football. He hasn't spoken to Romar or coach Steve Sarkisian, but said he's been thinking about it the past few days. Thomas was unsure which position he would play, but said he's played football his entire life so it wouldn't be that difficult.

--- The biggest question mark is Breshers. He said he could play today if he had to, but clearly he's not 100 percent. Breshers said he's improving. Romar said Breshers reminds him of Brockman.

"I've watched him and Brockman go at each other in practice. I didn't say he is more physical than Jon Brockman, I said he has the chance to be just as physical if not more physical. And he has farm strength. (Like) he came off the farm bailing hay and now he's going to throw somebody out of the way. The young man is strong and quick and he will surprise. I keep joking about it. I'm just trying to keep Coach Sarkisian away from him. When you see a guy that nimble with that size, boy it catches your eye. He has a presence when he posts up. It's very difficult to get around him. But yet when you try to post him up, he's so strong you're trying to establish your position and now the ball is thrown and he's quick enough to release and get around you and steal the ball. That's the type of athlete that he is."

--- Romar also had high praise for Matthew Bryan-Amaning.

"We all know Matthew has all the talent in the world and I think Matthew has a little something to prove not to everyone else, but to himself. It think quietly Matthew is on a mission. He is also another that has gotten himself in great condition. And he's gotten stronger and he's playing with a lot of confidence right now."

--- Darnell Gant will have to earn a starting spot after alll and will not be named a first-day starter like Thomas and Pondexter.

--- UW will hold 24 practices over a 30-day period beginning Friday.

--- The Huskies are expected to keep the roster at 12 players. They will not use their scholarship remaining and there's no immediate plans to add a walk-on.
