A look at in-state players named to Rivals.com's Top 250
Now that the recruiting Class for 2012 has been signed and sealed, if not yet delivered, recruitniks start looking forward to the Class of 2013.
An obvious question is who the top recruits in the state will be, and how the in-state class compares to that of years past.
One good way to measure is with the Rivals.com Top 250 lists, which date to 2006. Here's their first list for 2013, which came out earlier this week and includes just two Washington players --- albeit the highest-one ever rated, Skyline HIgh QB Max Browne at No. 8.
Indicative of what analysts say is a class that at the moment doesn't figure to compare in top-flight talent to that of 2012, there is just one other in-state player on the list --- Bellarmine Prep QB Sefo Liufau at 196.
There were five in-staters on the final Rivals Top 250 for 2012 ---- Lakes HIgh OT Zach Banner at No. 16, Puyallup High OL Josh Garnett (33), Mariner High RB KeiVarae Russell (124), Lakes High WR Cedric Dozier (152) and Mercer Island High QB Jeff Lindquist (250).
That tied 2011 for the most since Rivals.com began compiling the lists in 2006. The five in 2011 were Gig Harbor TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins (39), Skyline High WR Kasen Williams (98), Auburn High DL Danny Shelton (120), Gonzaga Prep TE Charlie Hopkins (200), and Gonzaga Prep RB Bishop Sankey (235).
Here's a look at other in-state players named to the Rivals.com Top 250 through the years:
2010 --- Skyline High QB Jake Heaps (63), Lakes High DL Sione Potoa'e (92),
2009 --- Garfield DL Deandre Coleman (106).
2008 --- Lakes High TE Kavario Middleton (57), Kennedy High DT Everrette Thompson (176), Hockinson High OL Nick Cody (123).
2007 --- Rainier Beach OL Emeka Iweka (Rivals didn't rare them prior to 2008 but just listed a top 250).,
2006 --- Ferris High DT Cameron Elisara, Ferndale High QB Jake Locker, O'Dea High S Taylor Mays, Bellevue High OL Stephen Schilling.
That's 23 players in eight years, so roughly three a year. And I count 11 that ultimately signed with Washington --- Lindquist, Seferian-Jenkins, Williams, Sankey, Shelton, Potoa'e, Middleton, Thompson, Iweka, Elisara and Locker --- out of 21 so far that have signed.
Stanford (Hopkins, Garnett), Cal (Coleman, Dozier) and USC (Banner, Mays) each have two while Oregon (Cody), Notre Dame (Russell), Michigan (Schilling), BYU (Heaps)
