Woodward says UCLA hasn't talked to Sarkisian
Posted by Bob Condotta
UW athletic director Scott Woodward said today, in response to a question prompted by an LA Times report that UCLA has talked to Steve Sarkisian, that UCLA has not asked to talk to Sarkisian.
He also said that "Steve, I know, hasn't talked to them, as far as I know.''
Asking permission of another school to talk to its head coach is a courtesy not required and frankly rarely really done anymore in the increasingly cutthroat world of college sports, so the fact that UCLA hasn't contacted Woodward to talk to Sarkisian only means so much.
But Woodward, who is in New York with the UW basketball team, said in a phone interview that "I don't think anything is imminent. I'm not worried.''
Asked if he was concerned that UCLA might want to talk to Sarkisian, he said "you are always concerned. You are always worried when you have a good coach that other people will want to talk to him, which is a good problem to have. But Steve is very happy at the University of Washington, in a great situation, and I think everything is fine going forward. I think at the end of the day, Steve will be the coach at the University of Washington.''
As noted earlier, Sarkisian signed a new five-year contract at UW following last season that escalates each year and will pay him at least $2.85 million in its final year, 2015 (here are details on that contract). Because he was just re-upped last year, there are no current plans for an extension or raise this year.
