Another new Husky? UW gains a punter

Posted by Bob Condotta

Well, anyone wondering who would do the punting for UW in 2012 and beyond got their answer Saturday as the Huskies received a commitment from Korey Durkee of Gig Harbor High.

Durkee said in a phone interview this afternoon that he committed to UW on the spot after Husky coach Steve Sarkisian offered a scholarship while Durkee was attending the school's Rising Stars camp.

"I came up to a camp today and I had a couple of nice punts and kicks, a couple hit the (Dempsey) Indoor ceiling, and they (came up) after the camp and coach Sark said 'hey, how do you feel about playing Husky football?,'' Durkee said.

Durkee said yes, and with that became the 12th commit for the Class of 2012 and the fourth from an in-state player.

Durkee was the All-Narrows League punter and kicker last year as a junior, playing alongside current UW tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

He was also recently rated as the No. 23 kicking prospect in the country by KohlsKickingCamp.com after saying he averaged 46 yards a kick with a 4.6 average hang time at a Kohls Camp. He can also kick but said he'll start out concentrating on punting at UW.

Air Force was his only offer so far but he said he had also been hearing from Alabama, Oregon State and Oregon. An older sister attended UW and he said he's considered himself a Husky fan ever since. He also said he's good friends with Seferian-Jenkins and is excited about playing with him again.

Punter was a need for this class with Will Mahan and Kiel Rasp --- who will battle for the starting job this fall --- each being seniors.

Durkee said knowing he'll have a chance to step right into immediate playing time was another attraction of UW.

He's punted at Gig Harbor the past two years but has been a goalie for much longer, attracting college attention in that sport, as well --- he said UC-Santa Barbara and San Diego had each shown interest, among others. He was the Tacoma News-Tribune's soccer player of the year in 2011.

Name me one other position where, we only offer one or rwo scholarships to, that can get us an extra 10 yards on EACH possession. In Sark I trust.  Posted on June 25, 2011 at 8:07 PM by DAWGONE in AZ. Jump to comment
