Huskies set to launch "locker10in10'' campaign Saturday
Posted by Bob Condotta
The Washington Huskies and QB Jake Locker will be in the national spotlight when they play at Brigham Young at 4 p.m.
And UW will try to maximize the attention focused on UW by launching its website promoting Locker Saturday at 10:10 a.m. (the timing an obvious play on Locker's jersey number and the year). Pictured to the right is how the front page will appear (though without coming soon). Here's a link.
The website features a section called "The Real Jake Locker", which provides an in-depth look at Locker's personality and upbringing in Ferndale. Additionally, school officials have helped organize citizens of Ferndale in forming a "pen pal" letter-writing charge where Ferndale residents mail weekly handwritten letters highlighting Locker's accomplishments to members of the national media.
The school says that the campaign also aims to generate awareness both of Locker's astounding on-field accomplishments and his significant contributions to the Seattle community and the University of Washington, including his substantial involvement in Touchdowns For Kids. Locker was instrumental in the creation of Touchdowns For Kids, a charity soliciting pledges per touchdown to raise funds for nearby Children's Hospital.
As you'll notice, nowhere is the word "Heisman'' visible. UW has been careful to portray this as simply a get-out-the-word campaign for Locker and not necessarily geared at the Heisman, though if that's what ends up happening all the better.
In fact, I detailed some of the reasoning behind that in this story that I wrote last week.
I'm hopping on a plane to Provo now, but will have more on the blog later, including my pick (oh the anticipation!!!).
