ESPN examines the UW-BYU game, and a couple of links

Posted by Bob Condotta

A couple quick links as kickoff nears. ...

--- ESPN.com has a couple of good overviews of the UW-BYU game. First is this video from Andrea Adelson, who says that "quarterbacks will take center stage'' in the game and says that UW has a good chance to break its 12-game road losing streak. She notes that BYU has struggled in the past with athletic QBs who can run, notably Florida State's Christian Ponder (and you figure that comparisons of how Locker does against BYU and how Ponder did a year ago in FSU's 54-28 win could loom large in the Heisman race). No prediction is made, however.

--- Also, ESPN.com's Scouts Inc., has a detailed breakdown of the game in its Insider package. Since it is a pay item I won't give away too much of it. But here's what they concluded:

It's difficult to pick against a well-coached BYU team playing at home, but the Cougars don't have enough proven weapons on offense to keep pace with Locker and his mates. Though Polk won't put up great numbers working against an aggressive and active Cougars front, he'll be effective enough to keep Locker out of a lot of third-and-long situations and set up play-action. Look for Locker to take another step in terms of decision making as well. He will buy his receivers enough time to get open when BYU is conservative and quickly locate a favorable matchup when BYU blitzes. Add in his ability to extend drives with his feet when nothing is available downfield and Washington gets the win on the road. Prediction: Huskies 31, Cougars 24

--- If you're looking for a BYU injury report, Jay Drew of The Salt Lake Tribune provided a good one in this blog entry yesterday. Sounds like BYU is healthy as Drew notes that coach Bronco Mendenhall said he's never had a healthier team heading into an opener in his six years as coach of the Cougars.

--- And as one of you posted during the live chat, RB Brendon Bigelow of Fresno, an early commit to UW who has been said to be wavering, recently re-injured the same knee on which he had ACL surgery last year and is awaiting an MRI.

--- SI.com breaks down the top offensive pro prospects in college football with Locker right at the top of the list.

--- And in case you missed it, CoachSark's blog passed along this inside look at Locker's photo shoot for Men's Health.

All for now.
