ESPN explains "The Dillon Baxter Hoax''

Posted by Bob Condotta

Interesting story from ESPN.com's Shaun Assael today, explaining what it calls the "Dillon Baxter hoax.''

That's a reference to the events of June, when it was alleged by USC that Baxter --- a freshman running back there --- had been illegally contacted about transferring by five schools, including UW.

The Assael story is a pay story, however, so I'm not going to cut and paste it. Essentially, however, it says Baxter was talking with friends at other schools (including, apparently, UW) and then "boasted'' that he was getting interest from those schools, which mushroomed into the allegation that he had been contacted by those schools (which was actually the rumor all along of how this got started). Baxter admits in a document obtained by ESPN.com that he "misspoke'' when he said he had been contacted by other schools. The story implies the incident is among the reasons Baxter is suspended for USC's opener against Hawaii.

UW vehemently denied the accusation in a statement that night, and took it a step further to include that it had not contacted any USC players.

UW was among the schools that later got an apology from USC. UW officials said they were satisfied to let the issue die there.
