In the one bit of personnel news to emerge from Pac-10 media day concerning the Washington Huskies, coach Steve Sarkisian says the career of linebacker Alvin Logan (pictured) is over due to chronic knee issues. Sarkisian said Logan will go on a medical scholarship to continue his education.

"His knee just can't get right,'' Sarkisian said, saying the decision was made "just this past week. ... It's disappointing because he had a nice spring and he liked the move to linebacker.''

Logan had been in the running for a starting spot at strongside linebacker, competing in the spring with Victor Aiyewa and Matt Houston.

That job will now be even more wide open heading into fall camp. Incoming freshman Josh Shirley could end up competing at that spot, though Sarkisian said it's not a given.

"We're going to look at it,'' he said. "I'm not quite sure yet if we are going to play him solely at linebacker or as a hydrid standup defensive end/linebacker type position. We'll assess that early in camp and see how it fits.''

Another true frosh who could fit there is Jamaal Kearse --- Sarkisian confirmed that Kearse will get his first look during camp at linebacker.

Sarkisian said another option is to move Mason Foster back to strongside linebacker from weakside and install Jordan Wallace as the starter at the weakside --- Wallace was the backup there in the spring. Foster played strongside a year ago.

"We've got Vic and Matt, and the one thing we could easily do and it could happen in a day is we move Mason back to that spot and play Jordan Wallace at the (weakside),'' he said.

Logan, from Aurora, Col., played receiver in 2008 before moving to defense last year, playing primarily at safety and then moving to linebacker in the spring. But he had had knee issues throughout his career, playing just two games last year in part due to those injuries.

Logan becomes the 19th scholarship player to depart the team since the arrival of Sarkisian in Dec., 2008.

Sarkisian said there shouldn't be any other personnel moves prior to the start of camp Aug. 9. He said "we're all in, we're all there, everybody is clear,'' in terms of academics.

He also said he expects DEs Kalani Aldrich (knee) and Everrette Thompson (Achilles) to be ready for the start of camp. He said that doesn't mean they will be 100 percent and participating in every drill, but that they will be on track to play against BYU Sept. 4.

He said other players who missed the spring due to injury (such as Cody Habben and Chris Polk) are fine.

As far as freshmen and their positions, he said the only real news is that Michael Hartvigson and fellow Bothell teammate Evan Hudson (a walk-on who enrolled and participated in the LEAP program) will start out at tight end.

That will help fill in the depth void created by the loss of Kavario Middleton. He said he didn't anticipate making any other position moves to account for the loss of Middleton, though he noted that Dorson Boyce does a lot of the same things in his fullback/H-back role as does a tight end (meaning Boyce can stay where he is, yet be placed in positions where he plays as essentially a second TE on the field).
