Another new Husky

Posted by Bob Condotta

Washington continued its aggressive early recruiting for the Class of 2011, landing a commitment Thursday from Taniela Tupou, a defensive lineman/tight end from Archbishop Murphy in Marysville.

Archbishop Murphy coach Dave Ward confirmed to the Times an earlier report from Dawgman.com that Tupou had committed.

Ward said Tupou called him shortly after committing to tell him the news. Tupou attended UW's practice today and was seen exchanging high fives with Husky coaches afterward.

"He's been thinking about it for a while and he and his parents decided it would be really good to keep him close to him and he liked the visits he'd had (to UW) and the coaches,'' Ward said. "He's excited about it.''

Here's a story we wrote on Tupou last November that details why staying home would be important to him, and also that UW was his first offer.

Ward said UW coaches plan to use Tupou as a defensive lineman. Ward said Tupou is 6-3, 265 but could easily handle another 20-30 pounds, which would seem to indicate he would eventually end up as a tackle as well as an end.

"He's got a nice frame,'' Ward said. "He could put on another 30 pounds and keep his quickness.''

Ward said Tupou had an offer from BYU and was hearing from the likes of USC, Michigan and Tennessee. But he said Tupou has a large family in the area and wanted to stay close.

"He liked the Huskies from the beginning,'' Ward said. "That was his first choice. It's a great fit in every way.''

Ward said a benefit is that Tupou now doesn't have to go to camps all summer to try to raise his stock and can start on UW's weight program and preparing for his senior year of high school.

Tupou has a four-star rating from Scout.com, which also lists him as the No. 26 defensive end in the country.

Tupou is the seventh commit for the Class of 2011, the first currently playing at a high school in the state of Washington (safety Evan Zeger is formerly of Skyline and now in Las Vegas). Here's a list.
