Curtis Shaw leaving Huskies

Running back Curtis Shaw is transferring from the Huskies in search of more playing time elsewhere, UW coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed today.
Shaw, a sophomore from Lincoln High in Stockton, Calif., had 32 yards on eight carries in nine games last season, struggling to get on the field as other backs such as Chris Polk, Johri Fogerson and Demitrius Bronson emerged.
Shaw is still in school but will look for somewhere else to play after the quarter, possibly a lower-division school where he would be immediately eligible.
Shaw came to UW in 2007 and was one of seven true freshmen to play that season, seeing time both in the backfield and at receiver --- he had five catches for 47 yards and seven carries for 12 yards.
He sat out the 2008 season after leaving the team in August for family reasons.
He returned in the spring of 2009, but while the new UW coaching staff was intrigued by his speed, Shaw couldn't carve out a major playing role last season.
He's the second running back to transfer since the end of the season, joining Willie Griffin, who also transferred in an effort to find more playing time somewhere else.
That leaves Polk, Fogerson, Bronson and Brandon Yakaboski (who is still on the team despite some rumors to the contrary) as veterans returning at the tailback spot for 2010. They will be joined in the spring by true freshmen Deontae Cooper and Jesse Callier, who each plan to be enrolled in time for the spring. Cooper is already enrolled and will participate in the spring and Callier is expected to enroll for the spring quarter and be available for spring football.
