Is USC waiting to make a pitch to Sarkisian? Del Rio apparently staying in Jacksonville UPDATED

Posted by Bob Condotta

There are lots of conflicting reports out of Jacksonville this morning on the future of Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, who was reported last night by the Los Angeles Daily News to have received a contract from USC.

UPDATE 10:05 a.m. --- Peter King of Sports Illustrated, who reported yesterday that Del Rio was making calls to assemble a USC staff, has just Tweeted that Del Rio will stay in Jacksonville.

Del Rio was scheduled to meet with Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver today, which had been portrayed as make-or-break for his future there --- and maybe opening the door to take the USC job. But the kicker was that Del Rio couldn't just quit without giving up $15 million, even though many speculated that ideally, he'd probably rather be the new coach at USC. The LA Daily News reported this morning that Del Rio had informed USC he would not walk away from that $15 million.

If Del Rio falls through, as it now appears, there are increasing reports today that the Trojans will come after UW head coach Steve Sarkisian, who was assistant head coach at USC under Pete Carroll from 2005-08.

ESPN's Shelley Smith just reported live on the 9 a.m. SportsCenter that that she has heard there is something of a power play going on at USC between athletic director Mike Garrett, who wants Del Rio, and other alums, who want him to "make a pitch to Steve Sarkisian.''

Sarkisian said on Friday that he wasn't interested in going anywhere, calling UW his "dream job.'' He hasn't spoken publicly since other than to say in an e-mail to the Times on Sunday (and later to the Associated Press) that he had had no contact with USC. UW AD Scott Woodward said Monday around noon he thought it possible USC would try to talk to Sarkisian but that he was confident the coach would stay.

Sarkisian did just Tweet that he welcomes Carroll to Seattle and his first cup of coffee "is on me.''

Interestingly, the LA Times didn't mention Sarkisian at all in its story today, instead listing Mike Bellotti and Chris Petersen as alternatives if Del Rio falls through.

As I wrote last night, I think there will be a little bit of anxiety on Montlake until USC hires a new coach, though here's one person hoping Sarkisian gets pulled away.
