Is USC focusing on Del Rio?

There are multiple reports tonight that USC is talking seriously with Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio about taking over as head coach for the departed Pete Carroll.

UPDATE, 10:15 p.m. --- The LA Daily News reported tonight that Del Rio has been sent a contract to become USC's next coach. (Here's a more complete version of that story). And as I post that, I see that the Jacksonville.com is reporting late tonight that Del Rio will stay with the Jaguars in 2010.

Del Rio being hired by USC would soothe the nerves of UW fans who may have been a little anxious hearing a couple of other reports today that the Trojans could try again to make a run at UW's Steve Sarkisian. As I wrote earlier today, UW AD Scott Woodward didn't rule out that could happen but said he was confident Sarkisian would stay --- and said there had been no contact yet.

But none of that angst may be necessary if the reports about USC and Del Rio are true. Peter King of NBC and Sports Illustrated is reporting that Del Rio is placing calls to potential assistants. Jon Gold of the LA Daily News is also reporting that he hears it's Del Rio along with defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta, who worked this year at Notre Dame.

And the SportsByBrooks blog has this look at the situation, reporting that Mike Garrett isn't making the final decision, and that if anything happens with Del Rio it could happen as early as tomorrow.

This report from a Jacksonville TV station notes that Del Rio didn't want to talk about USC tonight, while this story lays out Del Rio's situation in Jacksonville, which is supposed to get some clarity tomorrow when he has a meeting with the team's owner.

There's also more detail today on what could face the next USC coach in terms of possible penalties as ESPN reports that the school will face the NCAA Committee on Infractions Feb. 19-21. There was also this not-so-good news for USC concerning a former assistant coach.
