Locker happy with decision to stay put

Posted by Bob Condotta

UW QB Jake Locker and head coach Steve Sarkisian will hold a press conference Friday afternoon to discuss the quarterback's decision to stay in school, as well as allowing the coach to give updates on that and other matters pertaining to Husky football.

It's a press conference that had been planned since the mid-December day Locker decided to stay at UW for another season --- he was in the midst of finals at the time, then was headed home for the holidays and said he wanted to handle the media all at once after the New Year. It's being held on Friday since Sarkisian has been out of town the rest of this week recruiting.

Still, news of the press conference led to speculation in some quarters that Locker might be reconsidering his decision --- that option was apparently discussed today on KIRO-AM today by none other than former UW QB Brock Huard (I didn't hear it, but have read on this board and elsewhere that he said that today on his show, and worth noting he does his show along with Mike Salk).

So just in case, I put in a call today to Jake's father, Scott Locker, who laughed and said that any possibility his son might have changed his mind was news to him. "I'd have to say that's a false statement,'' Scott Locker said.

He said his son betrayed no hints of second thoughts while home for the holidays saying that "every time we talked about it he said he was more than happy with his decision.''

Scott Locker also quashed another rumor that had made the rounds --- that Jake Locker had gotten back an evaluation from the NFL that indicated he wasn't projected to be quite as high a pick as speculated elsewhere.

In fact, Scott Locker said the family has still never seen the evaluation. He said that within a few days of Jake Locker's announcement that someone from the NFL called and asked if Jake still wanted his name put through the process. Scott Locker said he actually forgot to tell Jake about the call and that they never did get back to the NFL. He said he anticipated they would tell the NFL "not to waste their time.''

Scott Locker said when he heard the reports about the evaluation that "I had to kind of laugh at that.''

As for Jake, he's returned to school this week, taking classes and attending conditioning sessions with the rest of his teammates.
