All-Decade Team, special teams

Posted by Bob Condotta

In another installment of our look back at that decade that was, today the special teams.

PLACEKICKER --- John Anderson. Really only one choice here as Anderson left UW No. 2 on the school's all-time field goals made list at 68 and also had the most memorable single-game performance of the decade by a kicker in the 2002 Apple Cup. In terms of just percentage, however, Erik Folk had the best season of any UW kicker this decade in the just-completed campaign, hitting 18-21, 85.7 percent, third on the single-season list behind only Chuck Nelson's 96.2 (25-26) in 1982 (the NCAA record) and Jeff Jaeger's 88.5 (23-26) in 1985.

PUNTER --- Sean Douglas. Another easy call as Douglas left UW as the school's career leader in average per punt, 42.8, also setting the single-season record in 2006 at 43.2. In terms of average, the best season by someone else was Garth Erickson's 41.8 in 2003.

KICKOFF RETURNER --- Louis Rankin. Rankin gets it in a close call over Roc Alexander. Rankin finished fifth on the school's career KO return list with 1,206 yards on 51 attempts --- the only person this decade ahead of him is Charles Frederick, but Rankin's average is a lot better --- 23.6 to 18.5. Rankin also had one of just two TDs on KO returns this decade, in the 2007 Apple Cup.

Alexander's 28.3-yard per return average in 2001 on 22 attempts is the best of the decade, and he also had the other return for touchdowns this decade against Idaho that same season. And his 155 yards of total kickoff returns against Arizona in 2001 ranks No.3 on the school's single-game lost. But Rankin had more attempts and a similar average.

Marlon Wood also deserves some special mention here, turning in the second-best yards-per-attempt of the decade at 25.7 in 2006, a number that includes an 87-yarder that was key to winning the 2006 Apple Cup.

PUNT RETURNER --- Charles Frederick. Frederick led the Huskies in punt returns for three straight years from 2001-2003, the first Husky to do that since Nesby Glasgow from 76-78. He also had the only two punt returns for TDs this decade. Otherwise, UW hasn't gotten a lot out of this unit the last few years as the leading punt returner has had eight or fewer attempts four of the past six years.

DEEP SNAPPER --- Danny Morovick. After UW had for years seemed to have trouble finding a consistent snapper, Morovick was brought on board in 2006 and handled every snap --- punt, FG and PAT --- for the next four years.

A close second is Ben Mahdavi, who handled all the punt snaps from 1999-2002 while also playing linebacker. But Morovick was the only snapper to handle all duties for as long as he did this decade.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER --- Chris Stevens. The linebacker/defensive end was the only non-returner or snapper to win the team's season special teams MVP award more than once in this decade, contributing a flurry of big plays. He had a blocked punt he recovered for a TD that was key to the 2006 Apple Cup win, returned a botched punt snap for a TD against Arizona in 2007 and also blocked a punt against Arizona State in 2008.

Also deserving consideration here is Tyler Krambrink, who turned in maybe the most memorable special teams play of the decade with the hit and forced and recovered fumble on Miami's Santana Moss in the 2000 game that led to UW's first TD and got the state rolling for Washington's win.

Joe Lobendahn, Zach Tuiasosopo, Paul Homer and Marquis Cooper are among others who stood out for their play on coverage teams this decade.
