Ranking the Pac
Posted by Bob Condotta
State of Washington football fans have to just keep reminding themselves that history has proven time and time again the cyclical nature of sports. But man it would be nice to get in that time machine and get there. ...
1, Oregon --- It might be blasphemy to write this on here, but Jeremiah Masoli looked a little bit like Marques Tuiasosopo circa 2000 at the end of that Arizona game. He could end up the All-Pac-10 QB yet.
2, Oregon State --- You never hear anymore that they wish they had Dennis Erickson back. And zero signs that the Beavers are going away anytime soon.
3, Cal --- No November stumble for Jeff Tedford's crew this year, as the Bears instead are playing their best ball of the season as it nears its end. Despite it all, a 10-3 record could hardly be deemed a disappointing season for the Bears. Now has the week off to prep for visit to Seattle Dec. 5.
4, Stanford --- Cal exposed that Stanford has been susceptible to the run at times this season. But a win over Notre Dame this week puts the season back in the unquestionably successful category.
5, Arizona --- Referenced this earlier today, but not a in incredible stretch for the Wildcats, who are 6-4, to finish 6-6 with games remaining at Arizona State and USC. Whatever happens, it's still better than almost everyone thought in August. Still, what might have been figures to linger.
6, USC --- Too low for the Trojans? They've got time to prove it with home games remaining against UCLA this week and Arizona next week. And they could still end up 10-3, which wouldn't be so bad for a crumbling dynasty.
7, UCLA --- Another ugly win, but have to give it to Rick Neuheisel for getting another one of his teams to play their best football in November. But I'm thinking UCLA fans really won't care that much if the Bruins get pasted again by USC.
8, Washington --- Yes, ASU beat Washington and all that. But ASU's Pac-10 record (2-6) is worse than UW's right now, and Devils seem to be going the other direction right now --- though the QB situation obviously hasn't helped.
9, Arizona State --- I hadn't realized ASU hadn't had back-to-back losing seasons in 62 years until now. But sounds as if Erickson, while frustrated, isn't in any trouble.
10, Washington State --- The only thing the Cougars rank better than 87th in the nation in is net punting. And again dead last in total defense at 516.64.
