Can this season rank as one of UW's biggest improvements ever?
Posted by Bob Condotta
For my story for today's paper, I wrote about what is left for the Huskies after Saturday's loss at Oregon State.
And among the carrots still left is to put this season in a category to be regarded as one of the biggest single-season improvements in UW history.
In fact, with two more wins, UW would finish 5-7 after having gone 0-12 last year. That would obviously be five more wins than last season, the biggest improvement since 1970 when the Huskies went 6-4 in the first year with Sonny Sixkiller at QB after going 1-9 in 1969.
The biggest improvement since then came in 2000, when Rick Neuheisel and Marques Tuiasosopo led the Huskies to the Rose Bowl and an 11-1 record a year after going 7-5, or a four-game improvement. This UW team can match that one by winning one of the last two.
One season that technically reads better than the 2000 season is 1977, when UW is listed with a 10-2 record, having gone to the Rose Bowl in the third year under Don James, a year after going 5-6. However, UW went 8-4 on the field that season, later having losses against Mississippi State and UCLA rules as forfeit wins.
As mentioned in the story, the biggest single-season leap came in 1959 when the memorable third team for Jim Owens went 10-1 and won the Rose Bowl a year after finishing 3-7, a leap of 6.5 games.
So the question for Husky fans will be whether a 5-7 season, which again would go down as the biggest single-season improvement in 39 years, would be satisfying in any way, or just that add to the disappointment considering all the earlier games that got away.
PROGRAMMING NOTE --- We'll have more later today from Steve Sarkisian's regular Monday press conference. However, since this is a bye week, there won' t be a depth chart or some of the other usual trappings of a game week.
