Petitt talks recruiting

Posted by Bob Condotta

In part two of our bye week recruiting series, I asked Ryan Petitt, who is the publisher of UDubSports.com, a Rivals.com site, to assess Washington's recruiting efforts to date.

Here's what he wrote in a really detailed e-mail looking at UW's recruiting so far and where it stands in the Pac-10, and what also might be ahead for the Huskies, as well:

"There is often a bump in recruiting for a first-year coach at big programs like Washington. However, Steve Sarkisian and his staff have certainly exceeded expectations thus far with a 2010 class that currently ranks No. 20 in the country. If all goes according to plan and some players who have been high on Washington for a while now commit, they could end up in the top-25.

But teams like California (10 commits), UCLA (10 commits), North Carolina (11 commits), Oregon (9 commits), Florida State (13 commits), and Michigan State (14 commits) all have quality kids but low numbers thus far. Each of these schools along with others have the ability to ratchet things up late and help contribute to Washington falling out of the top-25.

Just don't get too caught up in the star and team ranking game. No matter where the Huskies may end up, they have a good class and the type of quality players you start to win with.

It's obvious Sark wanted to get more athletic in 2010, bringing in plenty of versatile players capable of lining up at multiple positions. Jamaal Kearse can play S or WR, Chris Young could play S or LB, Taz Stevenson could play CB, S, or WR, John Timu is a high school quarterback that will play S, Keanon Lowe is a WR or CB, Darius Waters and Brent Williams can put their hand down but Waters will end up at LB while Waters may also or will be a pas rushing specialist. Princeton Fuimaono can play LB or S, DiAndre Campbell could play WR or CB and Jesse Callier will either be a CB or RB.

You get my drift? Some of these guys will solidify roles in the coaches eyes before arriving on campus but most will not.

Here is a list of players Washington still has a good shot at landing:

4-star LB -- Honolulu, HI -- V.J. Fehoko
4-star LB -- Eureka, CA -- Soma Vainuku
4-star ATH -- Los Angeles, CA -- Hayes Pullard
3-star LB -- Culver City, CA -- Victor Burnett
3-star LB -- Orange, CA -- Garret Gilliland
3-star DE -- Redlands, CA -- Andrew Hudson
3-star DT -- Aiea, HI -- Lawrence Lagafuaina
3-star DT -- Anaheim, CA -- Kirifi Taula
3-star DT -- Honolulu, HI -- Sani Fuimaono
0-star DT -- Oakland, CA -- Fred Thompson
3-star OL -- Waialua, HI -- Micah Hatchie
3-star OL -- Honolulu, HI -- Kaiwi Crabb
3-star OL -- Mission Viejo, CA -- Michael Criste
0-star OL -- Los Alamitos, CA -- Niu Sale
3-star S -- Colton, CA -- Derrick Malone
3-star CB -- Los Alamitos, CA -- Shaquille Richardson
3-star CB -- Ventura, CA -- Troy Hill

Here are some players Washington still can get but don't count on it:

4-star CB/S -- Corona, CA -- Demetrius Wright
3-star --WR -- Corona, CA WR -- Tyler Slavin

JC players Washington is in on:

OL -- San Francisco, CA -- Ryan Clanton
OL -- Santa Clarita, CA -- Louiszell Alexander
DT -- San Mateo, CA -- Matangi Tonga

As you can see this is a large list of players and Washington is only going to take around another five commitments. And there are still some holes that need to be filled with the remaining players they take.

It's no secret the Huskies need depth at both offensive and defensive line. That is why 11 of the 22 players I listed play in the trenches. They would love to bring in a few JC players to provide immediate help, but that is easier said than done with Washington's strict transfer guidelines. Since when is physical education not a respected college curriculum? It's a slap in the face to all PE teachers around the country if you ask me.

But With Colin Tanigawa committing a few days ago, Washington got their future center. They will probably take one more high school offensive lineman and will also take one of the JC offensive lineman if they become available. If the Huskies can get DE Hudson and any of the defensive tackles they will have a very complete class.

Washington could also use extra depth at MLB and are in on a couple of good ones. Plus, if you are plucking wideouts to play cornerback midway though the season, obviously that is also an area of concern. It's also a concern that right now they are really only in on two cornerbacks. However they have some players like Stevenson and Callier that will most likely end up there.

Like I have already said, this is a very good class and exactly how you want to start a college coaching career. And besides the big names like Deontae Cooper, Erik Kohler, Sione Potoae, Keanon Lowe and of course Nick Montana, there are a few under the radar players who are big additions.

A couple of local standouts could make impacts early in their career. If Auburn's Chris Young takes care of his studies and makes it onto campus in time, he has a chance to be very good in a hurry. He already has the size to play weakside linebacker and would be a nightmare for offenses with his ability to run and deliver highlight film hits.

Colin Porter was the missing piece to a Bothell Cougar team looking to take the next step after a disappointing 2008-09 season. They have a big offensive line and Porter is the biggest, they have a good offensive line and Porter is the best. The Cougars average 220 yards rushing per game he's the main reason why.

Mililani High School's Stevenson personifies the type of athlete Husky coaches want in their program. He's tall (6-foot-2), rangy, can run well, can play multiple positions and is a team leader in high school. He's the putty Sark and Nick Holt want to mold their future out of."

That's all, and thanks again to Ryan and Chris Fetters of Dawgman.com for agreeing to answer a few questions from us on recruiting.
