Breaking down the key play
Posted by Bob Condotta
The Mason Foster interception is a play Husky fans will be reliving for years. And luckily in this day and age, that's easy to do with replays available all over the place.
Here's a good YouTube copy of the play which shows clearly what happens.
Foster has gotten a lot of publicity for the play and rightly so. But Steve Sarkisian noted afterward that an unsung hero was safety Victor Aiyewa.
"The play really started with Victor Aiyewa, who went and took away the initial bubble screen that made the quarterback pull the ball down and then throw a little unbalanced,'' Sarkisian said. "That obviously ended up leading to what happened --- the ball kicked off his foot.''
Indeed, watch the replay and you can see Aiyewa read the play quickly and run and take out Arizona WR David Roberts, who had killed the Huskies all night, finishing with 12 catches for 138 yards and a touchdown. That led Nick Foles to throw it to Delashaun Dean, where what happened then happened.
You can also see what Mike Stoops talked about afterward about it being a run-pass option. Frankly, looks like a big hole there if Foles had handed it off, though maybe it looks that way because UW defenders read that he was throwing it.
Here's another good review of the play from The Sporting News.
And no doubt, there will be more in the days and weeks to come as who knows what this play may lead to for this team?
