Scheduling changes afoot?
Posted by Bob Condotta
I'm back on the ground for a little layover and I see at least one of you has commented on some rumors making the rounds about potential schedule changes down the road.
I have heard the same rumors that what is likely to happen is that a series with BYU for 2011 and 2012 will be scrapped with home games instead against Eastern Washington and Portland State.
That will end UW's streak of never having played a lower-division team. The Huskies are one of just four schools to never play a lower-division school --- USC, UCLA and Notre Dame being the others.
But the Huskies made the move in part to add a home game to the 2012 schedule, when UW would have had just five in a 12-game slate. The Huskies are already scheduled for a game at LSU that year and having a game at BYU would have meant just five home games since that's a season when the Huskies will play just four home Pac-10 games.
In 2011, UW already has games at Nebraska and home to Hawaii and will replace BYU with one of the Big Sky schools. Word is there won't be a huge difference in finances and it will obviously make the schedules a little easier to navigate in terms of wins and losses. It also means UW will play a Jake Heaps BYU team just once in his career --- next year in the season opener at Provo --- instead of three, and that Heaps won't play any college games in Seattle.
Also a possibility, apparently, is a series against Wisconsin and another one with Hawaii that will add another trip to the Islands in a few years.
