In between Colts' touchdowns here in Indianapolis, I was able to get hold of Pac-10 coordinator of football officiating Dave Cutaia and ask him about a couple of the more controversial plays in the UW-Notre Dame Saturday.

I included those comments in this story reviewing the Notre Dame game and also looking ahead a little bit that will run in Monday's paper. The on-field officials for the game were from the Pac-10, the replay officials from the Big East.

Cutaia hasn't had a chance yet to review the film of the game --- he was attending the UCLA-Stanford contest --- so his views were somewhat limited. He said he hadn't seen the replay of the Chris Polk TD run that was reversed so he couldn't speak on that one yet, but also said that it would be up to the Big East crew that worked the replay booth to comment officially on why they reversed the call, anyway.

But he said he did see the two-point run by Robert Hughes and that "there was nothing that jumped out at me about it.'' He said that in his initial review he didn't think Hughes was ever down saying that "his forward progress was never stopped. ... I don't think he was ever stopped.''

As for whether there could have been a penalty called for teammates aiding Hughes into the end zone, Cutaia said that the evidence of that has to be "very, very clear'' and that it would be "difficult" to see "in a scrum like that.''

Whether Hughes was down could have been reviewable; whether teammates aided him could not be. Cutaia said replay officials typically do a quick review in the booth of all scoring plays, even if there isn't an official review called down to the field, and he's sure that happened in this case.

Coaches can also call for reviews on the field. But Notre Dame doesn't have a replay board in the stadium so the coaches couldn't quickly look up there to see if it warranted a challenge, as they can in most stadiums. UW coach Steve Sarkisian mentioned that later saying "there's no replay in the stadium so we have to go with what they said.''

Reality is, there's nothing much to do about any of it at this point. As all coaches do after all games, Sarkisian will send in a report to the conference office with his thoughts on any of the calls. And Cutaia and the Pac-10 staff will take that into account when grades are given to the officials for this game. And that's pretty much it.
