Saturday practice report

Posted by Bob Condotta

Still having some trouble with our blog system but with the help of some others at work, able to finally get some stuff up on practice this afternoon.

The Huskies worked out in shells for about two hours this morning, spending the most time they have all camp going against scout teams simulating the LSU offense and defense.

But there was about a 30-minute session at the end that wasn't a live scrimmage but did feature the ones against the ones, twos against the twos, that sort of thing. The defense definitely got the better of it, forcing a few turnovers and generally not letting the offense move much at all. I had Jake Locker at 5-11 for about 65 yards during that session, at least two passes thrown away to escape a rush. Another was intercepted by Mason Foster for a TD. Willie Griffin and Cody Bruns also had fumbles during that drill, indicative of the way the defense was getting after it.

"The defense, especially the three linebackers, was really flying around," coach Steve Sarkisian said afterward.

Most notable personnel wise were a few new players sitting out --- DT Cameron Elisara was resting a shoulder injury, DE Darrion Jones was sick, RB Johri Fogerson was out with an ankle injury, and so was WR James Johnson. CB Justin Glenn and Matt Mosley were also out. Sarkisian said none of the injuries was serious.

TE Kavario Middleton also remained out with a hamstring but should be back Monday. And backup DE Everrette Thompson was also out with an ankle injury.

The new injuries appear to have been sustained during Friday's "mock game," which featured some live scrimmaging that apparently got pretty intense. Foster said later that "it was physical."

Sarkisian had indicated earlier he might have a depth chart today, but that won't come out until Monday.

However, piecing together from what we saw at practice today, Vonzell McDowell was running as a starter at CB with Glenn out, opposite Quinton Richardson, and the two starting safeties were Nate Williams and Greg Walker. The LBs were the same as always. The DL would have been the same if Elisara and Jones had been healthy. Kalani Aldrich took Jones' spot and De'Shon Matthews filled in for Elisara. One highlight player today, however, was true frosh Talia Crichton, who got some significant time with the twos with Jones and Thompson out and was a continual presence in the backfield. "He's starting to come into his own," Sarkisian said, noting that Crichton was out early on with a groin injury. "He's come on the last couple of days and showed up again today so obviously that's a huge bonus for us.''

The number two D-line typically featured Semisi Tokolahi and Tyrone Duncan (with Nick Wood and Craig Noble sprinkled in from time to time) at tackles and Andru Pulu and Crichton at ends.

The two LBs were Trenton Tuiasosopo, Cort Dennison and Brandon Huppert. Sarkisian again praised Dennison saying that "he just keeps making plays practice after practice."

The backup CBs appeared to be Desmond Trufant -- who with each day looks like he's going to play this season --- and Adam Long while the two safeties were a mix of Victor Aiyewa, David Batts and Tripper Johnson, depending on the formation.

On offense, Chris Polk appears to be the No. 1 TB, though Sarkisian said later that no final decisions have yet been made. Still, he again praised Polk saying that "he continues to impress by how physical he plays. He's really grown up from one year to the next. He's had a tremendous camp so far.'' With Fogerson out, the other two TBs appearing to run with the main offense were Curtis Shaw and Willie Griffin with Demitrius Bronson working with the scout team during that session. Paul Homer was also back doing some work at FB and appears on the road to recovery.

With Johnson out, the WR corps appeared to be Jordan Polk, D'Andre Goodwin and Devin Aguilar with Jermaine Kearse and Bruns backing up -- though Kearse had a good day and will certainly be a major part of the rotation whever he ends up on the depth chart.

The OL was the same as always, though there continued to be a little bit of experimentation with a line featuring Ben Ossai at LT and Mykenna Ikehara at center.

Erik Folk was 2-4 during the FG session hitting from 41 and 43 and missing from 45 and 38. Backup Eric Guttorp made his only attempt from 38.

Aguilar and Bruns handled the PR duties with Fogerson sidelined.
