The second of two practices today is in the books, the Huskies completing a nighttime workout under clear skies and still hot temperatures about 20 minutes ago, as I write this.

THE BIG STORY

UW appeared to escape what might have been some pretty bad news as Johri Fogerson went down awkwardly late in the practice (during an OT session I'll explain later) and came up limping after what was a 17-yard gain. But coach Steve Sarkisian said later it's just a sprained ankle and he should be fine. Fogerson walked off on his own power without much of a limp.

OT NIck Scott also rolled an ankle but it also didn't appear serious. Another OT, Terence Thomas, sat out practice with his left foot in a boot (though we didn't get the exact details on that one).

Of the two ankle injuries, Sarkisian said "that's why they created tape.''

WHAT HAPPENED

Lots of special teams and specialty situations work in each practice, such as short-yardage or second-and-seven or first-and-10 plays, that sort of thing.

The night practice ended in rather spirited fashion as the offense and defense were tied afer two 11-on-11 full-contact sessions --- one working on first-and-10 plays (dominated by the defense) and other third-and-short (dominated by the offense).

So Sarkisian decided to send it to overtime, pitting the one offense and two defense against the two offense and one defense (but the ones going against the ones and vice versa).

Each offense scored the first time it had the ball --- the ones on a 21-yard pass from Jake Locker to Devin Aguilar and the twos on a three-yard pass from Ronnie Fouch to walk-on tight end Ben Hayes.

That sent it to a second OT where the ones went first and scored on a 16-yard run by Willie Griffin up the middle. But the twos couldn't respond this time, their drive stalling on an incompletion on fourth down at the 8-yard-line.

STARS OF THE DAY

The No. 1 offense ended up getting the better of it, but only after a real struggle in the first team session which featured a lot of work on first-and-10s. The offense managed to get more than 10 yards on only two of the 15 plays in that session, all of which started from the 20-yard-line, and was held to four or fewer yards or an incomplete pass on 10 in the first session.

In the second session, from the 40, the defense again dominated, the offense held to three yards or fewer or an incomplete pass nine times.

Then in a third session, again from the 20, the offense threw seven incomplete passes in a span of 10 plays, at least three of which were drops.

But seemingly on a dime, the offense turned it around during a third-and-short drill, picking up the first six. One of the highlights of that was a 34-yard pass from Locker to Jordan Polk on a third-and-two.

Sarkisian said later that such turnabout is what he's hoping to see, some good plays on both sides of the ball.

Overall, the defense seemed to get the better of it.

But in the OT session, the No. 1 offense, as mentioned, scored easily on the No. 1 defense both times it had the ball.

Overall in those sessions, Locker was 7-14 for 106 yards, though with at least three passes dropped.

Rushing, Griffin was 5-35, Chris Polk 5-26, Fogerson 4-22, Curtis Shaw 3-10 and Demitrius Bronson 3-8. Polk appeared the most effective of the backs during the short-yardage drill.

NOTES, QUOTES AND RANDOM THOUGHTS

--- E.J. Savannah was back getting full-contact action and appeared to come through it just fine. Savannah began the night working with the No. 2 defense but then moved to the No. 1's.

--- JC TE Dorson Boyce got a lot of work with the ones at tight end tonight. But this looked on the surface like a way to get Boyce some work and not a change in the depth chart, necessarily. Boyce and Kavario Middleton appear to do a lot of the same things (Chris Izbicki appears to work more inside in second TE type of stuff) so it makes sense he would stand in for Middleton a bit.

--- Per our discussion earlier today on the depth chart, the No. 2 safeties were Tripper Johnson at SS and Alvin Logan at FS with Jason Wells and Victor Aiyewa still out.

--- And Drew Schaefer was again the starting RT, as he had been earlier in the day.

--- It was one of the best days of camp for PK Erik Folk, who was 3-3, hitting from 48, 45, 43, all seeming to have a lot of leg. Backup Eric Guttorp then came on and hit from 42 and 36. Folk also hit both of the OT PATs, which came amid a lot of cheering and taunting from teammates.

--- With some of the other safeties out, the No. 3 safeties were Taylor Lappano and Nathan Fellner. Most interesting of that, however, is that David Batts didn't get any work at safety tonight, instead all of his action coming as a backup or nickel corner.

--- Quinton Richardson and Justin Glenn appear to still be the No. 1 CBs. Vonzell McDowell and Adam Long appeared to be the No. 2's and Matt Mosley and Marquis Persley the No. 3's.

--- True frosh LB Jordan Wallace continues to impress and had a nice open-field tackle of Chris Polk after a six-yard gain at one point.

--- Fouch was 3-5 for 20 yards and a TD during the OT session.

--- FB Paul Homer (hamstring) also was again not in action.
